Grapes of Wrath-Favorite Character(s)

WHO did you find most memorable from the novel? Why?

  1. The most memorable character was Jim Casy. I found him very interesting from the things he thought and said, to the actions he took. I took moments to think about his words, and although most were out of wack, I felt like they had meaning. By all means I did not enjoy that book, but I actually found myself enjoying the parts that involved Jim Casy. He was the most memorable because the moment he entered the story he had my attention.

  2. The most memorable character for me was definitally Ma. Ma shows amazing determination, as evidenced when she stands up to Pa with the jack handle, and she also shows her compassion as she suffers through a ride with grandma, who just died, across the desert. This compassion and fortitude are admirable traits and are qualities that I hope to exemplify. On a more literary note, I also found the situation of the family ironic because Ma is a major leader of the family throughout the story instead of the typical male role of leadership. Ma was both an example for me and a source of depth for the story, all reasons why Ma is my favorite character!

  3. I think the character that stuck out the most to me was Rose of Sharon. She wasn't my favorite character (at times I really wanted to shake some sense in her) but she was so committed to not having a "freak" baby. She didn't dance badly at the community dances at the government camp, and she drank milk when it was available. Though her efforts were lost when her baby was stillborn, I really admire her dedictaion to her child.

  4. You all make some decent points. Ma is the leader, Rose of Sharon was a baby freak, and Casy was an enjoyable fellow. However, I am centered on Tom. A man who was released from jail, breaking parole and heading out the the golden land of California, only to kill another man and have to hide the rest of his life...or at least a few months. This story is quite interesting to me, and I think that is why Tom really was the most memorable person in The Grapes of Wrath.

  5. The character that I find most memorable had to have been Reverend Casy. I loved how in the beginning of the story, Ma always kept asking him to say a blessing, and he kept declining. Whenever she got him to give a blessing though, it was the biggest B.S. i have ever heard. Reverend Casy pretty much just went on and on with random stories. I particularly liked Reverend Casy because of the fact that these "Blessings" were full of humor, or at least I thought they were funny. I also think i connected with him the most just because of how religious I am

  6. For me, Ma was the most memorable character. She is the mother of six children, but she doesn’t let that stop her from being a bold and courageous woman. Her outstanding ability to put all of her family before herself is always memorable. She is sure to look after the well-being of her mother and father all of the way until then end of both of their lives. Without a doubt Ma is the most spirited person in the group, meaning that she is not afraid to stand up for what she thinks is right. She will stand up to her husband without even thinking twice if she knows that he is not going to do what she wants him to do. Though Ma is not physically the strongest member of the family I believe that she is emotionally strongest. She is determined to keep her family safe and happy throughout their travels. I can honestly say that Ma is the most memorable character from the novel The Grapes of Wrath.

  7. I felt that Jim Casy was the most powerful character, as he gave his entire life to the betterment of others. When preaching the word of god wasnt good enough, he left the constraints of the bible behind. Casy struck out to help those who could not help themselves, the people trodden upon by those with too much to lose to help the class below them. Casy's wholehearted devotion to others was. Far more touching than any character trait shown in the rest of the book. The idea of a pastor who had left his bible is an intriguing though as well.

  9. I feel as if there three very powerful and memorable characters that show up throughout the novel. The most memorable character is clearly Tom Joad. I feel as if his character is supposed to the stubborn one, or the one who never learned from their mistake, because he had killed the man underneath the overpass. Therefore he had to run away and wasn’t seen for the rest of the book. Another very interesting character in the book is ma. She was the backbone of the family, she held everyone together. She was also important through the story because she showed the generous, giving, and kind sides to humankind. This was important because at the time people tended to be selfish and non giving. The last important character is thought to be portrayed as Jesus Christ, Jim Casy, was the most holy character. He was unfortunately murdered during the novel.

  10. My favorite character was Granma. Her attitude for life and her faith were rather strange to me considering the attitudes of the people around her and the death of Granpa. Her declarations while Casy talks shows she doesn't listen, but she is a memorable character nonetheless. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to see the dream of the family come to fruition.

  11. I think that my favorite character was Rose of Sharon because she gives up so much. She loses her husband. At the start of the book she and Connie were head over heals for each other and then he just up and leaves her alone and pregnant. Then all she has to remember him is her child, and once it is born they realize that it was a still born so in the end she dose not even have that. Then she is willing to give up her body in order to save a dieing man. She loses so much in the book I could not even come close to imagine what it would have been like to be her.

  12. I agree with Hannah. Rose of Sharon is an incredibly brave and resilient character. She goes through tremendous pains that no average person could tolerate. Her husband leaves her, while she is pregnant, her child DIES, and she has all of this on top of that fact that she is living through the Great Depression and dust bowl. That would suck pretty bad. Another reason I like Rose of Sharon is the fact that she would breast feed a starving man. That is one of the most symbolic parts of the book and it would be such a sad thing to have to do. She loses almost everything, and gives away what she has left. She is truly a selfless and extraordinarily resilient human being that, if she were real, I would have a great amount of respect for her.
